Overall Layout of Presentation Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) The future of EDI My Conclusions Questions

The Future of EDI The future looks grim. Alas, every technology must eventually die. EDI over the internet, thanks to RFC 1865 we can eliminate the VAN XML as an EDI replacement

Recall… EDI Example VAN Client Machine Sender Machine DB X- Lator DB X- Lator Raw Data EDI Document EDI Doc EDI Document EDI Doc Raw Data

EDI over the Internet Client Machine Sender Machine DB X- Lator DB X- Lator Raw Data Encrypted Doc Document Encrypted Doc Raw Data Internet Encr- ypt De- crypt XML Document Encrypted XML Document Could be FTP or E-mail

Acknowledging a Transmission Client Machine Sender Machine X- Lator X- Lator EDI Document EDI Doc Functional Acknowledgement (997) Internet Probably by E-Mail RFC 1865 - Defines all of this and all options (FTP, E-Mail, Internet VAN) Defines Encryption schemes(RSA, S-MIME), Everything!

XML Solution Today Client Machine Sender Machine DB X- Lator DB X- Lator Raw Data Encrypted Doc Document Encrypted Doc Raw Data Internet Encr- ypt De- crypt XML Document Encrypted XML Document

XML Solution Tomorrow Client Machine Sender Machine DB Encrypted Doc Document Encrypted Doc Internet Encrypted Request XML Doc Encrypted Doc

My Conclusions EDI should and will be eliminated XML should/will be used sparingly at first XML needs some more industry standard DTD’s before it will really take hold

Questions Ask your questions now: This is NOT a political statement! It is simply a picture to get the point across, that it is time for questions!
