Foundation of the Game: 1999 AECT Presentation in Houston An Instructional Technologist is a designer. But what exactly is a designer? Five designer archetypes were created: –Designer as Artist –Designer as User –Designer as Strategist –Designer as Counselor –Designer as Joker

Development of the Game: Project in a Graduate Seminar GRED 650: Topical Seminar in Simulations and Games was offered in Spring, 1999 at SUNY Potsdam. One student chose to develop the game as his culminating project in the course. Original handouts from Houston presentation and the presenter were consulted. A Deck of Cards was created consisting of: –5 Archetype Cards (Artist, User, Problem Solver, Counselor, Joker) –20 Attribute Cards (4 attributes per archetype) –20 Example Cards (1 example for each attribute)

Implementation of the Game: Incorporated into an Introduction to ID Course at the Graduate Level Played on the first day of class, the game introduced students to the various roles that an instructional designer takes on. Played on the 2nd to last day of class, after Instructional Design projects had been completed. Students could now relate to the various roles, and offered feedback about individual cards and overall gameplay.

Based on student feedback: A 2nd Version of the Game was created 4 Archetype card names remained the same. 1 Archetype card name changed. All Example cards became Recommendation cards. The Rules were finalized. All Graphics were changed. Card Text was modified.

“Develop a Variety of Solutions” is an Attribute Card. Which Archetype card does it match with? Gameplay: How Do You Play the Game? Here are the five Archetype Cards. “ Use models as a launch platform to develop multiple possible answers ” is a Recommendation Card. Which Attribute card does it match with?
