Effective Communication Greg Downey Department of Anthropology Faculty of Arts greg.downey@mq.edu.au

Communications The punchline comes first: communication is based on skills that need to be worked on to improve, do not come naturally. Intellectuals are professional thinkers and communicators. Communicating with supervisors. Presenting your research. Transition to teaching or professional presentations.

Communication with supervisor & advisors Supervisor is scarce resource. Help your advisors to help you. You are becoming a professional intellectual -- behave like one.

Communicating your research Tendency to present against a sense of inadequacy -- avoid! Understand your audience & objectives (e.g., job talk). Have a cocktail party version of research concepts. When interviewing, think out loud. Don’t over-prepare (time limit, pages, calendar). REHEARSE!

Transition to professional presenter Find your own style -- role models, actively improve. Know what you are trying to teach. Fit your method to your objective. Lecture presents small number of ideas (two or three at most). Tell them this point in the clearest language possible. Teach to the smartest. Use your own passion for the subject.

Do well to become confident. Reversal of cause and effect
