Aims and audience to introduce college staff to the University, its management and operation to explain the division of responsibilities between the University and partner colleges to introduce the main quality assurance processes for college-based programmes to outline the staff development and support opportunities available to college staff for staff from the following colleges, especially new staff – City College Brighton and Hove – Plumpton College – Sussex Coast College Hastings – Sussex Downs College the content is relevant for teaching and administrative staff

Why work with partner colleges? Corporate Plan 2007-12 commits to Corporate Plan 2007-12 – development of high-quality and relevant curriculum through work with partners – increase in enrolments at partner colleges – increased local participation in higher education – further progress in widening participation positive contribution to education and development in Sussex development and expansion of curriculum provision of right programmes in right place enable participation of non-traditional learners

Management of college programmes Each programme located in relevant University School School appoints Link Tutor, responsible for: – communication with course leader and delivery team at college – advise and guide on procedure and regulations – advise on curriculum and programme development College appoints Course Leader, responsible for: – day to day management of the course – development and review of the programme – deployment of staff and learning resources – representation of programme at University events and committees

Responsibilities for college-based courses The University’s responsibilities include: – assuring and maintaining the academic standards of awards – managing quality assurance and enhancement processesquality assurance and enhancement processes – managing the planning process for college provision – approving the constitution and membership of exam boards – managing the operation of exam boards and production of transcripts and certificates – supporting staff development for college staff teaching or administering HE programmesstaff development – development and maintenance of memoranda of co- operation with partner colleges

Responsibilities for college-based courses The college’s responsibilities include: – delivering programmes as validated – developing and reviewing the curriculum in line with University procedures – maintaining an appropriate, safe and suitably equipped learning environment – recruiting and managing staff to deliver and administer programmes – maintaining academic standards by engaging with the University’s quality assurance process – providing the University with information for external bodies as required

Responsibilities for college-based courses Shared responsibilities include: – marketing of programmes and recruitment of students – provision of library and other learning resources (College has primary responsibility) – provision of student support and welfare resources – development and operation of a range of student- related administrative processes – participation in committees, reviews, events and staff development activity

Quality assurance of college programmes Module and programme level processes identical to those for University- based programmesthose Relevant School will advise on requirements for annual programme monitoring reports School Academic Health report comments on partnership provision Additionally, Academic Partnership Committee receives external examiner reports and institution-level reports from collegesAcademic Partnership Committee APC reports to the annual Academic Health meeting on partnership provision College staff are represented on committees at all stages of process Partner College Review held at each college every five years to review management of programmes and effectiveness of partnership, and to help prepare for Integrated Quality & Enhancement Review (IQER) Partner College ReviewIQER

Staff development opportunities College teaching staff may apply to the University for a fee waiver for study on one of its modules or programmes, where the programme would provide relevant staff development for their role in the delivery of HE Your contract must last for the length of the proposed programme and your college must support your application College staff responsible for HE programmes (teaching or administration) can access – training courses delivered at the University – research seminars, lectures and presentations – Centre for Learning & Teaching events – the annual Partnership Conference Dedicated staff development activities for college staff are also delivered at colleges on request, or you can work through the materials online

Access to learning resources all college staff responsible for the teaching, administration or management of HE programmes can be provided with a University of Brighton username this provides: – access to electronic learning resources, journals and the Online Library – access to Staffcentral (University intranet) and Studentcentral (virtual learning environment) – a University email address Staff can also obtain a University library card contact partnerships@brighton.ac.uk to obtain a usernamepartnerships@brighton.ac.uk
