Welcome! BASROC/CONFORM Open Day Daresbury May 11 th 2009 Roger Barlow, Manchester University and the Cockcroft Institute
2
BASROC British Accelerator Science Radiation and Oncology Consortium Aim: hadron therapy with nsFFAG Physicists, engineers, clinicians from universities, hospitals, labs… http://www.basroc.org.uk
3
CONFORM Construction 0f a nsFFAG for Oncology, Research and Medicine Project funded by RC-UK ‘Basic Technology’ programme Build prototype nsFFAG – EMMA Design a nsFFAG hadron therapy machine - PAMELA Investigate other applications Now at halfway stage
4
What is an nsFFAG Accelerator? Circular accelerator Particles gain energy – Harder to bend Increase field in time or space before after low E high E Synchrotron FFAG – Fixed Field
5
What is an nsFFAG? Gradient in field focusses beam Alternate focussing and defocussing gradient gives stability This is a standard technique.
6
What is an nsFFAG? Particles gain energy – harder to bend Increase focussing and bending field in step – constant optics This is Scaling. Easy for synchrotron Restrictive for FFAG – requires low field gradients, large apertures. Drop the requirement – let the optics change: the non scaling FFAG Works on paper – need to demonstrate. EMMA: world’s first nsFFAG
7
What this gives Accelerator capable of: Relativistic energies Fast acceleration High currents (mA) Simple DC magnets High reliability (in principle) Reasonably compact and low cost Lots of potential uses! Opportunities for manufacture
