1 Electromagnetic Waves Physics 202 Professor Vogel Lecture 13

2 Images in 2-D corner Reflector  The face in the lower right of the picture is the real face. Suppose the person winks their right eye. Put an asterisk over their right eye.  Image 2 is a reflection in mirror 2. Put an asterisk over the image of the eye that is winking.  Repeat for image 1.  The image in the upper left is a reflection of a reflection. Put an asterisk over the winking eye in this image. Is it the same “hand” (right vs left) as the eye that is winking in the real face? Image 1 Image 2 Image 1 Image of image 2 in mirror 1

3 Images in Curved Mirrors 1.Look at yourself in the Concave mirror a)describe the image when you are close  larger or smaller?  upright or inverted? b)describe the image when you are far  larger or smaller?  upright or inverted?  (answers to a and b not the same – if they are, you’re either not close enough or not far enough) 2.Look at yourself in the Convex mirror  describe the image  larger or smaller?  upright or inverted?

4 Refraction and Appearances  Law of Refraction n 2 sin  2 = n 1 sin  1  Light changes direction when it refracts  we see images where light appears to come from  In the demo, the circle at the bottom represents the actual object, the dashed line represents the direction where it looked like the light was coming from.  Draw the actual ray of light  draw and label the incident ray from under the water  and the refracted ray in the air (to observer’s eye)
