2 Ground Rules The consultant is not to write the project The consultant is your advisor Therefore, s/he gives ADVICE You need to give him/her material to give you advice about....

3 Ground Rules The consultant is not to be the creator of the basic idea of the project. This is YOUR project You tell them you want to go to Denny’s; s/he tells you how to get there....

4 Ground Rules The Consultant can translate SOME stuff S/he CANNOT translate a whole text (what are you thinking? That would be a SERIOUS publication and worth WAY more than $375)

5 Consultants Are KEY to the project Some people don’t like using them, BUT It is good to have outside, expert help

6 Consultants Are necessary If you don’t need a consultant, why do you need to do the project?????

7 Consultants Are difficult to maneuver Are just like you They have other things going on

8 Consultants Are not paid that well Are, like you, doing this because they think it is important, not simply for the money (it’s only $375) Need to feel that they are valued

9 How to... Find an area consultant Use one of our agreeable speakers (cue to Good Lisa to give the email addresses)

10 How to... Look at a Title VI Center There are Six(?) in the neighborhood The closest have been listed on, you guessed it, the website They are required to do outreach to maintain their Title VI Center status

11 How to... Secure an area consultant Email him/her asking if s/he would be willing to do it NEXT WEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!! If s/he doesn’t answer email, you don’t want to work with this person anyway and move on to the next one.... Send him/her the contract (coming to your mailbox next week)

12 How to... Secure an area consultant Look locally Sometimes there are faculty or professionals in your community who can meet your needs

13 How to... Secure an area consultant Be clear Be polite Be specific about details, e.g. dates and your project’s parameters

14 How to... Work with an area consultant Ask for reading material first (bibliographies, database info, etc.) Actually do the reading

15 How to... Work with an area consultant Send drafts on or before the deadlines Give the consultant clear and realistic Deadlines Parameters Expectations

18 How to... Secure a language consultant Pick the language that matters to you Find a local consultant (if accessible) E.G. Penn Valley has two Arabic experts available (for different specific kinds of projects)
