Production Project Organization FCal1 Production Advancement Review February 20, 2002 1 Peter Loch University of Arizona Tucson, Arizona 85721 FCal1 Production Project Organization at the University of Arizona Peter Loch University of Arizona Peter Loch University of Arizona

Production Project Organization FCal1 Production Advancement Review February 20, 2002 2 Peter Loch University of Arizona Tucson, Arizona 85721 Three major contributions from the University of Arizona to the ATLAS FCal Construction Project: 1.Two electromagnetic modules FCal1A and FCal1C built on site; 2.Acquisition and testing of cold electronics (cold cables, summing boards) for all six FCal modules; 3.Final assembly of FCal1 modules on location at CERN; 1.Two electromagnetic modules FCal1A and FCal1C built on site; 2.Acquisition and testing of cold electronics (cold cables, summing boards) for all six FCal modules; 3.Final assembly of FCal1 modules on location at CERN; Each of these three “top level” projects is broken down into processes which have relations with each other. Each project breakdown is driven by preparation of parts and the assembly sequence.

Production Project Organization FCal1 Production Advancement Review February 20, 2002 3 Peter Loch University of Arizona Tucson, Arizona 85721 processes are organized in a tree-like structure; each process has a name and number; the process number is used to locate the process in the tree; processes include production, acceptance inspections, quality control, and storage (passive); each process is described in a process sheet; the process tree and all related information, including the process sheets, are going to be accessible on the web; processes are organized in a tree-like structure; each process has a name and number; the process number is used to locate the process in the tree; processes include production, acceptance inspections, quality control, and storage (passive); each process is described in a process sheet; the process tree and all related information, including the process sheets, are going to be accessible on the web; most complete description

Production Project Organization FCal1 Production Advancement Review February 20, 2002 4 Peter Loch University of Arizona Tucson, Arizona 85721 Part Assembly + + + + + = Assembly processes only!

Production Project Organization FCal1 Production Advancement Review February 20, 2002 5 Peter Loch University of Arizona Tucson, Arizona 85721 self-contained (sub-)processes are also described in workflow diagrams; these diagrams establish the sequence of procedures which are part of the process; self-contained (sub-)processes are also described in workflow diagrams; these diagrams establish the sequence of procedures which are part of the process; (approx.) number of parts (tubes here) location procedure name & number

Production Project Organization FCal1 Production Advancement Review February 20, 2002 6 Peter Loch University of Arizona Tucson, Arizona 85721 we think we have a pretty good understanding of the project break-down and the processes involved -> we know how to build the calorimeter; we have a way to formalize this understanding and document it -> we can communicate how we have built the calorimeter; we think we have a pretty good understanding of the project break-down and the processes involved -> we know how to build the calorimeter; we have a way to formalize this understanding and document it -> we can communicate how we have built the calorimeter;

Production Project Organization FCal1 Production Advancement Review February 20, 2002 7 Peter Loch University of Arizona Tucson, Arizona 85721 top level process sheet for tube processing describes the major production sequence; all process sheets and other important information like part lists are collected into a Manufacturing and QC Handbook (after the fact) top level process sheet for tube processing describes the major production sequence; all process sheets and other important information like part lists are collected into a Manufacturing and QC Handbook (after the fact) Process name/number Component name [WBS reference] QC forms and data sheets Sub-processes/procedures Relations

Production Project Organization FCal1 Production Advancement Review February 20, 2002 8 Peter Loch University of Arizona Tucson, Arizona 85721 List of materials List of tools Detailed work instructions lower level process sheets with detailed work instructions are manufacturing manuals, sometimes posted at the corresponding work station; most of the manuals are finalized during the actual process -> construction history, faster assembly of second module… lower level process sheets with detailed work instructions are manufacturing manuals, sometimes posted at the corresponding work station; most of the manuals are finalized during the actual process -> construction history, faster assembly of second module…
