2 The Pathway to Success Introduction & Purpose In today’s competitive market space, institutions that thrive are those that develop signature programs and activities. Benefits of Distinction: Internal: Pride & modeling excellence External: Awareness & investment interest Purpose of Goal 4, Initiative 1 is threefold: 1.To evaluate existing program of distinction and promise; 2.To build a mechanism for further investment in selected programs from this group; and 3.To enable new programs of distinction and promise to be identified and supported.

3 The Pathway to Success Methods Develop rubric for evaluation of existing programs of distinction, solicit summative reports, evaluate reports, and submit recommendations. Establish a new process for building distinction via an emphasis on aligning cross-disciplinary and cross-unit effort in partnership with external partners to address clear societal needs. Process to include internal and external reviews and be transparent. Develop and deploy a campus education campaign to new process (Unbounded Possibilities). Develop rubric for the evaluation of submissions, solicit and evaluate concept papers, and solicit and evaluate full proposals. Conduct a review that results in recommendations for funding.

5 The Pathway to Success Discussion Previous programs of distinction were evaluated and recommendations for funding made; invitees folded into UP process. Extensive campus education campaign on UP kicked off with David Hopkins, and later information sessions, collaboration gatherings, and Helpdesk in HMSU Commons. 31 concept papers submitted; 15 invited for full proposals; 12 submissions ($5 million over 5 years; $10 million in requests). Summer seed funding; up to $4,000 per project. 6 summer workshops; 79 participants. External Review panel to augment internal panels.

6 The Pathway to Success Summary Project successful to date Campus educated to UP. Substantial increase in cross-disciplinary, cross-unit, and external collaborations. Existing programs of distinction embedded. External review panel involved for final round. About to make awards (on or around Nov. 30).
