2 Take Responsibility for Shaping Your Career Think ahead about the kind of career you want and make thoughtful choices along the way. Develop plans for all aspects of your work –Research, Teaching, Service, Citizenship Consider how you are relating, balancing, and integrating the different aspects of your work.

3 Take Responsibility for Managing the Context in which You Do Your Work Negotiate your load assignment with your department chair. If you encounter problems or barriers (e.g., data collection delays, equipment or lab problems, etc.) alert your chair and take appropriate steps early. Be familiar with Department, College, and University Bylaws.

4 Recognize that others can offer guidance, support, and advice…But you have the responsibility to envision and create your career.

5 Preparation Over Time Seeking and Using Feedback about One’s Scholarly Productivity

6 Seeking and Using Feedback Seek feedback from an array of diverse sources. Seek feedback from “tough” critics. Seek feedback in an ongoing way during your career. Realize that suggestions and feedback may be “mixed.” –Take responsibility for assessing suggestions and making decisions about your use of suggestions. Be purposeful in charting one’s course in response to feedback.

8 Consider… Look at examples of narratives/portfolios from other colleagues Talk with colleagues who are “exemplars” in one’s field in constructing the kind of career one aspires to pursue
