Overview  Guiding Philosophy  Agua Para el Pueblo – our partner organization  Project History – year in review  Potential Projects – the next steps  Skills

Guiding Philosophy  Find a partner organization and a project that results in a mutually beneficial collaboration and interchange  Use the best available technology and a professional engineering approach  Develop strategies to broadly disseminate project results  High standards!

Agua Para el Pueblo  Drop by drop helping the development of Honduras  The non governmental organization with the most experience in the formulation and execution of water and sanitation projects in Honduras  Based on wide community participation, simultaneously helping with the infrastructure and with community capacity development to ensure the sustainability of each project  Philosophy of responding to the demand for water and sanitation, ensuring the provision of a high quality service that contributes to improving the living conditions of the population and supports the development of each community

Project History: Spring 2003  Background work to identify appropriate project types that would make a good fit between EWF and a partner organization in the developing world  Initial choice of creating a software tool that would facilitate the design of gravity fed rural water supplies  Preliminary software design  Contact with two water supply organizations

Project History: Fall 2003  Choice of Agua Para el Pueblo as partner  Improved pipeline design algorithm  Addition of GPS capabilities to replace traditional theodolite surveying techniques based on request from APP  Transfer data to EPANET to design distribution system  Trip to Honduras to learn more about APP needs and their design techniques as well as the social and environmental context

The Big Picture: Goals for the Water Supply Design Tool  Phase I: Create an alpha version of the design tool and get suggestions from APP for improvement (done)  Phase II: Create an improved version and test it exhaustively (Spring semester)  Phase III: Implementation and Documentation  Send an EWF intern to work with and train APP technicians to use GPS and the water supply design tool and make additional improvements as needed  Document reliability of design and cost savings  Phase IV: Technology Dissemination  Work with APP to disseminate GPS and Water Supply Design Tool technology to other agencies that are building water supplies

Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet EPAnet Network EPAnet INP File Garmin GPS Unit Survey Data Distribution System Design Survey Data Acquisition Transmission System and Tank Design Flow Specifications and Junction Locations Excel VBA ScriptEPAnet Import Command Excel VBA Script EPAnet Export CommandExcel VBA Script List of needed materials Water Supply Design Tool Schematic Add horizontal angle information to enable creating plan view in EPANET Return distribution materials list to the spreadsheet Create VBA script to import Waypoints into the spreadsheet Create specifications and user manual describing surveying technique and waypoint labeling scheme Calculate vertical error from GPS measurements Create file structure to save data Test and debug transmission line design Propose initial network pipe sizes Add pressure break

Potential Parallel Projects  APP website  Water quality  Wastewater

Website for APP  Create a website structure for APP that can be easily populated with their information and maintained by an administrative assistant  Enhance APP visibility  Useful for fundraising and publicity

Water Quality Projects  Prefilter at the water source  Grit chamber at the water source  Explore point of use water treatment technologies  Hypochlorinator design  Review design specifications  Determine how the current design was created  Evaluate the magnitude of the potential flow errors  Design an improved hypochlorinator

Hypochlorinator

Wastewater Project  Honduran state of the art is latrines for rural areas and sewers without treatment for urban areas  Major challenge for improving public health and protecting the environment  Study alternative, low-cost systems for wastewater collection and treatment in rural communities

Skills  Visual Basic  Fluid mechanics/hydraulics  Spanish  Web design  Water treatment technologies  Willingness to work hard to make a real difference

Questions…

Water Supply Design Tool Tasks  Add horizontal angle information on theodolite data for transmission line to obtain correct plan view  Obtain or create VBA script to acquire Garmin GPS data directly  Calculate vertical error design requirements based on GPS repeated measurements  Create a data file format containing all data for a water supply system so the entire spreadsheet doesn’t need to be saved  Test tool with multiple data sets to verify that the design tool produces the correct designs

GPS Data Acquisition Tasks  Define conventions for labeling waypoints  Source  Transmission line  Tank  Distribution system nodes  Water faucets  Repeated Fixed point for error analysis  Test GPS data acquisition using points of known elevation  Write a GPS water supply survey user’s guide in Spanish
