Weather Maps and Symbols Science 1206
2
Lesson Objectives to understand how meteorological data is collected and how the data is used to predict future weather conditions. to locate weather symbols typically used on weather maps which indicate the following weather conditions: high pressure region (indicated by H); low pressure region (indicated by L), wind direction and speed and type of cloud cover, air temperature (°C); visibility (the distance x100m that one can see); weather condition (may include rain, freezing rain, snow, thunderstorm, fog, haze, or dew); dew point (temperature at which moisture will condense on objects); type of low, middle, and high cloud cover and isobars (lines representing regions with the same atmospheric pressure).
3
Predicting Future Weather Conditions Have you ever noticed how certain people who work closely with the sea or land (fishing, logging, and farming) tend to be able to forecast the weather without the use of instruments. As technology advanced, people have been collecting weather data using simple instruments to quantify measurements of temperature, atmospheric pressure, relative humidity, wind direction and speed.
4
The Weather Forecast The Weather Forecast The study of weather and forecasting is called meteorology. The people who study the weather and try to predict future trends are called meteorologists. http://www.on.ec.gc.ca/greatlakeskids/glk-video-e.html

Activity Read "Interpreting and Creating Weather Maps" on Pages 683-685. Using the map provided, compile a listing of symbols located on the map and identify the meaning of each. Your list of symbols should include the following: high pressure region (indicated by H) low pressure region (indicated by L) wind direction and speed and type of cloud cover air temperature (°C) visibility (the distance x100m that one can see) weather condition (may include rain, freezing rain, snow, thunderstorm, fog, haze, or dew) dew point (temperature at which moisture will condense on objects) type of low, middle, and high cloud cover isobars (lines representing regions with the same atmospheric pressure) Select one area of the weather map and describe the weather conditions in that locality. Write a complete report of your findings in your portfolio.
