IM Definitions Protocol - the language rules used to transmit and receive messages; IRC, ICQ and Jabber/XMPP are protocols. Service - the system on which the Instant Messaging account is hosted. AOL and MSN are services. Client - a software application program that runs on your computer. iChat, Windows Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), Google Talk and Trillian are clients. Some clients support multiple protocols.
