2 Clauses And the answer is: He went to the store. He bought some food. Both of these are independent clauses. Both of these are complete sentences.

3 Clauses What about these clauses? When he went to the store If he goes to the store Since he went to the store After he went to the store Because he went to the store

4 These are all dependent clauses. They do not to make complete sentences by themselves. In order to make complete sentences, each dependent clause must be preceded by or followed by an independent clause.

5 Let’s look by again at our dependent clauses: When he went to the store If he goes to the store Since he went to the store After he went to the store Because he went to the store

6 Let’s add an independent clause to each dependent clause and make a complete sentence:

7 When he went to the store, he bought some food.

8 If he goes to the store, he will buy some food.

9 Since he went to the store, I’m sure he’ll buy some food.

10 After he went to the store, he came home.

11 Because he went to the store, he bought some candy.
