2 Number of applications: 707 applications in 2008/9 107 went through to the first stage shortlist 41 awards will be given at the final Panel

3 Applications are allocated to Sections of the Academy for first shortlisting. Interdisciplinarity

4 Numbers of Applications to each Section in 2008/9 History of Art and Music – 17 – 3 shortlisted History 1800 onwards – 75 - 6 shortlisted Modern Languages, Literature – 93 – 9 shortlisted

5 Applications timings: First stage applications: Submissions with references by 1 October Second stages applications: Submission by 28 February. Final panel: 6 May

6 Requirements: At first submission viva date must be set; the viva must have taken place by 1 April; for those with PhDs; the application must be submitted within 3 years of submission.

7 The Application Title and Project: A subject area connected to PhD, but not simply a revision of the PhD. Abstract – 150 words – write this first Statement of research already undertaken – 300 words Research Proposal – 1000 words

8 References 2 references – ideally the Supervisor and the External Examiner. If viva has not yet taken place, then a reference statement will be requested at the second stage of shortlisting.
