Information Sheet Aim of this study: To explore the possible usage of three different types of electronic games in education from subject matter experts’ points of view Why have you been invited to participate? This study intends to collect your views at the end of the PGCE Secondary Mathematics programme. You have the potentials of being game-based learning creator!

Whatever game ideas you generate in this session, you OWN the copyright. My role is to facilitate you in the ideas generation process and I am requesting your permission to treat your ideas as part of my research data. Of course, with the knowledge and skills you are about to acquire, you should be able to generate more ideas whenever and wherever you want. Information Sheet

Consent Form If you decide to take part in the research aspect of today, you have to sign a consent form. You will be free to withdraw from the research aspect at any time and without giving a reason. This decision will not affect you or your rights in any way.

Research Background This is a preliminary study of game-based learning which is being conducted as part of my PhD degree at the Warwick Institute of Education. It is a relatively new approach that could fundamentally re-design, re-format and re- structure the instructional systems in educational institutions to make learning fun and engaging.

Game-based learning Game-based learning is a form of learner-centred learning that uses electronic games for educational purposes. Related or synonymous terms: Serious games, educational games, instructional games, edutainment, courseware. This term is used in my research instead of others because of its neutrality between serious and leisure games.

Game-based learning Related or synonymous terms: Serious games: A serious game is a game in which education is the primary goal, rather than entertainment (Michael & Chen, 2006). Such definition excludes the use of leisure games, even though leisure games might be used in either formal or informal learning setting.

Edutainment Programmes or activities that use forms of mass entertainment to introduce opportunities for public education in a non-formal manner (Mason & Rennie, 2006). Courseware. Any type of instructional or educational course delivered via a software programme or over the Internet (Mason & Rennie, 2006) Game-based learning Related or synonymous terms:

Brainstorming AIM to collect as many ideas as possible You are Subject Matter Expert (SME) Brainstorming Techniques 1. Stickystorm 2. Mind mapping

Brainstorming: Stickystorm Listing and grouping 1. Write down your thoughts or ideas on a post-it note and puts it on a board or wall 2. Use thick pens and keep ideas to 3 to 4 words. 3. Group similar ideas to rationalise and organise. Theme Idea Theme Idea Theme Idea

Mind mapping Your Best Idea 1 What 2 Why 3 How 4 When 5 Where 6 Who What is your top ranked idea? Why do you rank it as the top idea? How would you want your game- based learning to be? When is the best time to use your game-based learning? Where could be the best setting for your game-based learning? Who would be benefited most if your chosen game-based learning is implemented successfully?

Six Thinking Hats Please write at least one sentence per hat

Six Thinking Hats: example

Six Thinking Hats: another example

White Hat (Objective) Tips: Facts & figures; information & reports

Black Hat (Critical) Tips: Judgmental or negative

Yellow Hat (Positive) Tips: Praise; why it will work?

Green Hat (Creative) Tips: Alternative; innovative

Red Hat (Subjective) Tips: Opinion; emotion and feelings
