ABET OUTCOME CHECKLIST
3
(ABET Outcome 3a: Ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering to solve problems). Students Apply mathematics, calculus and science knowledge to tool design, force, cutting power calculations and economics of metal cutting. Apply engineering material properties and stress- strain relationship to analyze stress/deformation in designing metal cutting tools. Work on a design project in which students show ability to apply principles of analysis and design across manufacturing area.
4
(ABET Outcome 3c: Ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs). Students Design a device (a metal cutting tool : for example broaching tool design), to perform a specific task. Deal with open-ended problems that require identification of the design goals and constraints, generation and exploration of alternative solutions. Use analytical tools to aid in the design process, select preferred concept and support final design.
5
(ABET Outcome 3d: Ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams). Students Work in 3-to 5-member teams to perform a semester-long design project. Participate in making decisions, elect a leader, discuss with team members, distribute the design tasks, and compromise on team project direction. Design and build a prototype to demonstrate its functionality and performance. Perform a group presentation at the end of the semester and write a group project report.
6
ABET Outcome 3g: Ability to communicate effectively) Students Make a brief presentation to class at the end of the term. Write a final report for their design project. Submittal organization, format, and technical writing were addressed in class. Class and studio discussions
7
( Outcome 3i: A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning). Students had to learn technical material on their own through library and internet research
8
(ABET Outcome 3g: Ability to communicate effectively) Make a brief presentation to class at the end of the term. Write a final report for their design project. Submittal organization, format, and technical writing were addressed in class. Class and studio discussions
9
Outcome 3k: Can use techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for practice Acquire skills in web-based research. Use word processing software for final project report. Use spreadsheet software for analytical and data analysis and for presentation of results. Use AutoCAD for drawing. Use power point to prepare oral presentation.

OUTCOME ANALYSIS Outcome 3a: Ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering to solve problems. Students demonstrated their ability to apply math, science, and engineering principles in 9 homework assignments, 2 midterms, and the final exam. Their performance in these assignments and exams was as follows: Homework – 70% of the students earned 70% or higher in homework scores. Midterm I – 60% of the students scored 70% or better in the first midterm. Midterm II – 75% of the students scored 70% or better in the second midterm. Final Exam – 70% of the students scored 70% or better in the final examination. Student Survey Results ( 20 responses)
11
Outcome 3g: Ability to communicate effectively. Student grades on specifically the written aspects of the project are not up to expectation due to their poor English language. The written submittals, while on average of good quality in terms of contents, were not at the high level of presentations.
