The SouthEast Coastal Ocean Observing GCOOS Board Meeting Regional Association (SECOORA) Feb 26, 2008 SUCCESSES SUCCESSES Must save money, lives or resources….need to be able to measure it! HF Radar UM Feb 2008 - HF Radar data at Univ of Miami RSMAS (Dr. Nick Shay) used to in lieu of broken ADCP so Army Corps of Engineers continue dredging operations in the port of Miami Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) failed after being placed near a dredging site to monitor currents. The ADCP monitored a western component of the current to ensure discharged dredged material did not go into nearby coral reefs After the ADCP failure, the project manager was able to use current data off the HF radar to monitor current speed and direction. Without the HF Radar, dredging operations would have ceased and losses would have accrued at a rate of 50-70K for the State of Florida, Port of Miami, US EPA, and the Army Corps of Engineers.
