4. Emmy Noether March 23, 1882 - April 14, 1935 Granted the second degree to a woman in the field of mathematics. Originally from Germany, Noether ended up the United States when Hitler took over and WWII began. 5. Mary Emily Sinclair 1878-1955 In 1908, Sinclair became the first woman to earn a Ph.D in Mathematics from the University of Chicago. Her dissertation, “Concerning a Compound Discontinuous Solution in the Problem of the Surface of Revolution of Minimum Area,” was published in the Annals of Mathematics, Vol 10 (January 1909), pp55-80.
