Hybrid Digital/Manual Site Drawings Presented By: Maha Medhat El Temamy By: Jim Leggitt Web Address: http://www.architectureweek.com/2002/0828/tools_1-1.html Topic Number: 126 Date: 28 August 2002 Date: 28 August 2002

The precision of computer rendering is difficult to match with a hand drawing. The character of a hand drawing is equally difficult to match with a computer rendering. Both have their advantages and place in the design visualization process. Computer Drawing Vs Hand Drawing

Hand drawing can pick up where basic computer modeling stops by easily filling in the elements that add valuable personality and scale. Computers Computers are great for understanding complicated geometric shapes, but they can also lack character and personality.

A digital terrain model (DTM) represents actual topographic site elevations in three dimensions. One approach to drawing a site development in 3D is to first plot the DTM in a grid pattern onto a sheet of Mylar and then draw trees and buildings by hand. Site Drawings with Hybrid Techniques

The file was brought into AutoCAD and adjusted in perspective view. Then, printed at A3. Several different growth scenario drawings were created on trace overlays manually.

A map of Gunnison, Colorado, when printed in perspective view, becomes a base drawing for describing growth scenarios. The same view of Gunnison, Colorado with one growth scenario hand-drawn in ink and markers.

Composite models can be built from site and building models. The topographic information was created as a digital terrain model, and the crude buildings were formed by assigning "Z" elevations to simple shapes.

The campus model, viewed from a low angle, was used to generate quick study drawings for the campus buildings. The drawings were created with pencil on vellum and colored on the reverse side with markers.

An aerial perspective made from an aerial photograph that was enlarged with Photoshop, and plotted as an underlay for hand drawing. Several Techniques Generating an aerial perspective by digitally modifying a site plan with Photoshop's perspective tools

A realistic computer model merged with a site photo. Site photographs were taken, and an AutoCAD model was rendered and assembled with the photograph in 3D Studio VIZ. Additional trees were inserted into the site with Photoshop

conclusionconclusion Sophisticated computer equipment makes it possible present fully animated "walkthroughs".which can be extremely useful in communicating dynamic site characteristics and building design ideas. On the other hand, drawings made with nothing more than pens, markers, and tracing paper can have equal success in communicating design ideas. If you can operate in both worlds, you'll be far ahead of the crowd.
