Mission 1 – Strike
8
Mission 2 – ISR/Attack
9
Concept: Modular Wing Design: -The main wing is detachable and can be changed between missions. (1) Swept Low AR wing for Strike Mission (2) Higher AR wing for ISR/Attack Mission Note: Drawing not to scale
10
Motivating Factors in Design Low Weight - Low Cost Multi-Mission Aircraft –High Performance, transonic/supersonic –Long Range, subsonic Very little support equipment needed, can launch from remote bases Both Supersonic and Subsonic performance
11
Initial Configurations Fuselage a/c with Variable Sweep Wing –Variable sweep for variable AR –weight penalty for mechanism, no need to switch configurations mid-mission, more versatility available from modular wing Fuselage a/c with Piezo Electric Morphing Wing –Wing morphs with piezo electric actuator –unproven technology, too expensive to develop Flying Wing a/c with Folding Wing –Not as versatile as modular wing, mechanism weight penalty, very little historical data Fuselage a/c with Modular Wing –Possibly Very economical, widest range of performance for various mission profiles
12
Final Configuration Modular Wing –Detachable main wing allows for very specialized performance characteristics on each mission. –Very easy modification for new missions in the future. –With external fuel tanks, and high W/S wing, range is highly expandable for ISR/attack mission.
13
Engine Characteristics Pratt Whitney F100-PW-232 –Updated version of F100-PW- 100 Increased power Improved TSFC Only one engine needed to obtain performance desired
14
Materials Selection
16
Maintenance Wing is removable for easy replacement Pre-fabricated replacement wings can be kept on-hand Wings do not have to be changed every mission
