System for Engine Location Of a Web Train Paul Wimmer and Adam Weintrop Dr. Irwin and Dr. Schertz 11/14/05

2 Outline Current position on time line Accomplishments of week 3 Goals for week 4

3 Time Line

4 Outline Current position on time line Accomplishments of week 3 Goals for week 4

5 Week 3 Scoped track and found out voltage was wrong Realized track power supply was “fried” Connected DC voltage to track and saw train move! Took current measurements with this setup

6 DC Sent to Track 1 Ohm resistor was placed between source and track to measure current Vin – Vin +

7 Scope Display Scope across resistor should be current the train is drawing Current without train was 1.06A RMS Current with 1 Train was.88A RMS Current with 2 Trains was.23A RMS The frequency is around 60Hz

8 Current Sensing Research One way we thought to accomplish current sensing was divide the current into ranges 0 current –off Small current–idle Large current –running With the proper amplification, the A/D would only need to discern between these 3 states

9 Microprocessor Research One variation of the 68HC12 has 2 10-bit 8 channel A/D’s With a 16-bit microprocessor the FPGA board currently controlling DCC can be eliminated and all processing done from the microprocessor

10 Outline Current position on time line Accomplishments of week 3 Goals for week 4

11 Problems to Address for Next Week Make sure power amp is ordered Simulate train with a resistor and design hardware system and software system

12 Products Power Supplies (5V and a 12V) P2-100A Meanwell 323424PS323424PS Lenz LV101
