Toby Stegman Mikhail Romanoff Suspended Sediment Comparison of Developed and Undeveloped Drainage Basins in Humid Mountainous Terrain: Stowe, Vermont

Project Goals  Compare similar drainage basins on Mount Mansfield.  Measure Total Suspended Solids (TSS)  Compare results to decipher the effect of Stowe Mountain Resorts development

Study Location

Methods  Collect water samples in 5 gallon buckets Two storm events - one normal flow  Evaporate water  Weigh bucket with and without (TSS)  Compare and contrast results to precipitation and flow data  Write paper

Precipitation and Flow Data October

Data

Discussion  Notch Brook shows a higher (TSS) concentration  Direct correlation of (TSS) with stream flow Increase flow, Increase (TSS)  Clear cutting and urbanization increases (TSS) as well as surface runoff  High (TSS) is detrimental to fresh water fisheries  Increased (TSS) decreases the capacity of the Waterbury Reservoir

Conclusion  Stowe Mountain Resort’s development is a key source of increased (TSS)  New development is planned at Stowe, including 135 acres of trails, and hotels  Careful planning should be taken by developers at Stowe to reduce environmental impacts
