3 2 Objectives At the end of lecture, you will be able to - Develop good search strategies and conduct efficient PubMed searches - Identify right MeSH using title word and MeSH database - Use subheadings, major concepts and limit options to refine searches - Set up filters and save searches for an automated update - Save PubMed citations for EndNote

4 3 Development of Search Strategies Formulate the question Break the question down to various concepts Find the right MeSH/thesaurus for each concept Combine various concepts using Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) Apply limit options (language, subset, age, publication type, major heading, subheading) Run the search Modify search strategies and rerun the search

5 4 Locating MeSH Do a title search Display citations in Citation format to locate MeSH Malnutrition [ti] AND nursing home* [ti] OR Search the MeSH database Scope Note Subheadings Major Topics Explode

6 5 Narrow Your Search to Be More Focused Subheadings: nursing, prevention and control, therapy… Limit options: Language, age group, publication type, subset… Restrict Search to Major Topic headings only

10 9 Saving PubMed Citations for EndNote Select citations of your interest. Select “Clipboard” from the “Send to” menu. Click “Clipboard” to display all citations you save. Click “Display” to choose MEDLINE. Go to “Send to” menu to select “File” and save your citations in MEDLINE format with text file.
