Chapter 5 Input and Output By: Chris Denman
3
Input -Any data or instructions that are used by a computer Input Devices -Translate words, images, and actions that people understand into a form a computer can process
4
Keyboards Traditional, natural, and folding or flexible keyboards have various types of keys including toggle and combination keys
5
Pointing Mouse-pointing device on a computer Mouse-pointing device on a computer Joystick-control game action by varying pressure, speed, and direction Joystick-control game action by varying pressure, speed, and direction Touch screens-touching finger to screen to control operations Touch screens-touching finger to screen to control operations Light pens-directed at screen to control operations Light pens-directed at screen to control operations
6
Scanning Scanners convert images to digital data. There are two basic types of scanners. -Flatbed scanner-like a copy machine -Portable scanner-handheld device that slides directly across the image
7
Image Capturing Digital cameras-similar to traditional cameras except that images are recorded digitally on a disk or in the cameras memory rather than on film Digital video cameras-record motion digitally on a disk in cameras memory
8
Digitizing Devices Graphic tablet-uses a special surface and penlike device to directly capture or trace images on the tablet Digital notebook-uses a regular notebook placed over an electronic pad.The underlying pad records the movements of the pen as the user takes notes
9
Audio- input devices Discrete-speech recognition system- recognizes only individual words Continuous-speech recognition system- recognizes individual words and phrases in context, a key technology for the 21st century
10
Output Processed data or information from a computer. Output devices are hardware used to provide or create output from a computer
11
Monitors Cathode ray tubes-placed on a system unit or directly on a desk. Primary advantages are low cost and high resolution Flat panel monitors-used for portable computers and desktop systems These are only a couple
12
Printers Ink-jet printer- sprays small drops of ink onto paper Ink-jet printer- sprays small drops of ink onto paper Laser-uses a laser beam to produce images Laser-uses a laser beam to produce images Thermal-uses heat elements to produce images on heat sensitive paper Thermal-uses heat elements to produce images on heat sensitive paper
13
Combination Input and Output Fax machines-send and receive images via standard telephone lines Multifunctional devices-combine capabilities of a scanner, printer, fax, and copy machine Terminals-input and output devices that connect to a host computer or server
14
Terminals Dumb-sends and receives but does no processing Intelligent-sends, receives, and processes Network-low-cost alternative to intelligent terminal Internet-access to the Internet without a microcomputer
