Look closely at the first and last sentences 4. Use the standard salutation 5. Use the correct job title (how does the legislator want to be identified?) Standard Introductory Sentence: “Thank you for contacting my office regarding [issue x]. I appreciate having the benefit of your views on this issue.” 2

Research the mail archives (look at previous letters on the topic) 3. Research your legislator’s record 4. Research past correspondence with that individual 5. Use the correct job title 3
