Multimedia systems have variety of usages. They can be classified as I. Multimedia Presentation Systems II. Multimedia Conferencing Systems III. Multimedia Database Systems
3
Multimedia Presentation System A Multimedia Presentation System (MPS) is characterized by processing, storage, generation, manipulation and rendition of multimedia. Retrieve the multimedia information from a database for presentation. Database is created separately and stored as in the case of the system. The information accessed may vary dynamically within a subset of the database. In the case of MPS over the World Wide Web (WWW), the generation (web server) and the rendition (web client) are done at different locations. Example: distance learning (on-line courseware, on-demand instruction) and digital libraries
4
Multimedia Conferencing System An online real-time system. allowing two or more users to communicate and exchange information and to simultaneously manipulate multimedia documents. Persons at different locations work on same task. All participants see same information. System deals with creating digitized video/voice, data, images and graphics and transmitting such information across a communication network. The system deals with non-persistent multimedia information.
5
Example: Microsoft Netmeeting Conferencing for the Internet and Intranet Audio and video communication between two end stations
6
Multimedia Database System System deals with creation, maintenance and retrieval of multimedia information. Database can be at several sites and connected to workstations via a communication network. The query generated by any of the clients will be internally translated into one or more queries to the different servers. The responses that are received from the individual servers are pieced together into one composite response by the workstation.
8
MDS Application The database applications are half duplex. Source sends query and waits. Destination picks up the query, interpret, collects and collates the info required to forma response and sends it back to source.

(HDTV-on-demand server) Similar to a video tape rental store. The server digitally stores video on a large array of high-capacity storage devices Users can access the server by searching on the video’s subject title and can play the movie by retrieving the stored video from the server Two modes of operation: broadcast and on-demand. Broadcast: server=sender; clients=receivers On-demand: server=multiple senders; each client communicates with one instantiation of the server.
