INTRODUCTION TO GENETICS
CHAPTER 10 INTRODUCTION TO GENETICS
2
Karyotype- male or female?
3
Karyotype- Male or female?
4
Homeosis
5
1. What are traits? Physical Characteristics- phenotype
6
2. What controls each trait?
A. A gene pair= genotype. B. Environment
8
3. WHAT ARE GENES? a.deoxyribonucleic acid b.Make Proteins c.turned on/off by proteins
9
4. What are different forms of a gene?
Ans. alleles.
10
5. Who first studied genetics?
Person- Gregor Mendel (a monk) Year- 1822
11
6. What species did Mendel study?
Pea Plants True bred- (2 identical alleles)
13
7. Why were true breeding plants important for Mendel’s experiments?
Ans. inheritable patterns easier to see.
14
8. How did Mendel study genetics?
fertilized a tall plant with short plant Parents (P): tall plant X short plant. Offsprings (F1 generation): all tall!
15
9. What two conclusions did Mendel draw?
A. a factor is passed from one generation to the next. B. Principle of Dominance:some alleles are dominant over others. Not dominant allele= recessive
16
10. What symbols are used for the 2 alleles?
Example – height in plants. A.Dominant-Tall = use capital letter T B. Recessive- short =use lower case letter t
17
11. What genotypes can a plant with a tall phenotype have?
TT = homozygous dominant Tt = heterozygous dominant
18
12. What genotypes can a phenotype short plant have?
Tt = homozygous recessive
19
Genotype and Phenotype lab
Ear Lobes: Phenotypes possible- free hanging or attached to side of head.
20
What is your genotype? Free hanging- dominant= E Genotype: EE or Ee Attached- recessive= e Genotype: ee
