Controlled vs. Automatic processes Controlled processes are ones that you exercise explicit, conscious control over. Slow! E.g., Playing chess; writing a paper Automatic processes are ones that occur without any conscious intervention Fast! Riding a bike; taking a shower; brushing your teeth

Automatization How does a controlled process become automatic? Steps for riding a bike (age 4): Sit on bike seat Put feet on pedals Push on pedals Hold handlebars steady Pray Steps for riding a bike (age 14): Get on bike Push pedals and go
