OCW SE — PSSC Physics 2 OpenCourseWare Secondary Education › Physical Science Study Committee – Physics begun in 1956 by MIT’s Jerrold Zacharias and industry leaders › Goal: reform physics teaching in America to stress understanding of concepts over the memorization of facts › Spun off as Educational Services, Inc in 1958 › ESI produced hundreds of educational materials, including texts, films, film strips, audiotapes, posters, records, tool kits, tests, and games, and was awarded more than 150 national and international awards › By the early 1960's, nearly half of all high school physics students in the U.S. were using the PSSC curriculum › Largely top down approach scared some teachers, and hindered wider acceptance of the curriculum
