2. Types of PPT Presentations
Linear
Non-Linear…. Also called branching
There are primarily two types of PowerPoint presentations. The Linear presentation is simply a set of slides presented in sequential order. The viewer sits and passively watches as slide after slide after slide after slide pass by in front of them. (Click)
The second type of PowerPoint presentation is called non-linear or branching. Information is presented to the viewer in an interactive way, much like a web page. The viewer chooses the direction the presentation will take and the order in which the information will be received. It can be called the next generation of PowerPoint presentations.

The Non-Linear Presentation is very much like a web page in the way it is organized. The viewer controls the presentation. There is a navigation system built into the presentation. There are many features in a non-linear branching presentation that allow the user to interact with the information and content. Outside resources can be linked and viewed directly from the presentation itself and multimedia is easily incorporated into the non-linear format.
Let’s now look at the specific elements that make a branching presentation work.

Buttons allow the viewer to move through the various slides in the order that best suits their interests or needs. The navigation buttons lets the viewer access main topics or content information. Action buttons provide the viewer a way to move forward, backward or return to the home page. Hyperlinks are often used to give access to information outside the actual presentation slide. Whether it be a website or another media presentation.

Navigation buttons can look like a shape, picture, clipart, or text. Just about any element you choose can be made into a navigation button.
The key is to be consistent and clearly identify what the navigation elements are in the presentation.

Here is an example navigation buttons using a combination of picture and text to move the user through the content of the presentation.
In this example, if you want to learn how to be an astronaut, simply click on that button and you will be taken to the slide representing that information. From this slide you can choose additional links to learn more about becoming an astronaut. Those links might take you to the world wide web or other slides within the presentation.

Action buttons are the standard navigation buttons. They consist of a navigation bar, a home button to take you to the main navigation slide, buttons that allow the user to move forward or backward through the presentation and the end or quit button allows the user to escape or end the presentation at anytime.

9. More Action Buttons DOCUMENTS OR PDF FILES INFORMATION VIDEO
Additional action buttons give the user a way to access information relevant to specific slides. For example additional information on the slide’s topic. This might be video clip, audio or music… or possibly a document or other PowerPoint presentation. There is also an action button that will allow additional information or FAQ to be provided regarding the slide topic.

No matter what the action, the basis for all navigation buttons in PowerPoint is to create hyperlinks. Hyperlinking allows for any object, shape or text box to be linked to file or outside source, whether it be on the internet, a media file, or other documents files. You will only be able to access them if they are linked together. It the same idea as links on a website.

Does Sequence Matter???
For a non-linear PowerPoint presentation to be effective AND user friendly it requires planning and organization. The planning process is not optional. Unlike a linear presentation, where slides are lined up in sequential order the branching presentation takes the user in a variety of directions. The sequence isn’t as important as is the organization of common elements and topics. One of the most effective ways of organizing a branching presentation is to use a graphic organizer.

Graphic organizers provide a visual representation of what is going to take place in the presentation. Organizers allow you to see the entire presentation before you open the PowerPoint software. The organizers take time but the time you save in actually creating the presentation makes it well worth the effort. Plus it assures you that you have everything you need to create a non-linear presentation that will be dynamic, engaging and educational as well.

You should have discovered that a linear presentation is dependent on accurate sequential information. The non-linear organizer is dependent on organizing your presentation by topics or main ideas. You start with the main topic and add on your subtopics. Attached or linked to the subtopics might be additional details, web links, video files, music files or other relevant information to the sub-topic. Most likely, each element in this organization scheme will represent a button, slide content, or linked information. You can see at a glance what you need to create the non-linear presentation.

19. Graphic Organizer
This is also an example of a non-linear presentation… it just looks different. You still have your main idea, subtopics and linked or additional information.

Here is a completed graphic organizer. It uses both text and icons to represent elements for the presentation. As you collect the pieces to your presentation it is important to keep everything housed in a central file or location rather than scattered all over the computer. If you put the time into organizing your presentation you will find the pieces fall together quickly and you will have a presentation that will be interesting to everyone.

Once your presentation is organized … it is time to put the pieces together. You will first need to confirm that you have all the files, documents, video, audio and links ready to place in the presentation. The next step is establishing your navigation system and buttons. All this is accomplished by creating a Master Slide.

The Master slide will be used as a template for the rest of your presentation. It will house all your navigation buttons. You will only need to create them one time and they will be ready to use through out the presentation. If you find you need to make changes to your navigation elements simply change the master slide and the changes will apply universally throughout the presentation.
