Copyright 2004 Thomson SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS Premium content – as important as this may be, content alone is not enough to drive discovery in today’s digital environment. The ISI Web of Knowledge objective – Smart Discovery through provision of the ultimate environment of discovery for the user. In adherence to this objective, the Strength of the ISI Web of Knowledge lies not only with the information it contains, but with the way it works.

View records for selected Institutions, Authors, etc. and perform additional analyses on these selections.

Copyright 2004 Thomson SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS For Example - Publication Year View results by year(s), and also analyze the growth or decline of published research over time. “Analyze Results” – not only a tool for refining search results, but a means through which to gain insight into a body of research.

Copyright 2004 Thomson SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS New in Web of Science 7.3 One click search Author names or Group Author names

Copyright 2004 Thomson SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS Should a record seem especially relevant, Web of Science allows the user to quickly and easily create a Citation Alert. On a weekly basis receive e-mail alerts containing information on published papers that cite a papers you’ve selected. Citation Alert! Take advantage of the vast collection of Influential Papers within the Web of Science.

Copyright 2004 Thomson SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS Identify an Author or Paper that is very relevant to your search topic. As little information as an author name is sufficient to initiate a Cited Reference Search. New in Web of Science 7.3 View article titles on the Cited Reference Index page

SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS Available 1 st Quarter of 2005 – Web of Science “backfiles” 1900-1944 It has taken a tremendous effort on the part of many to achieve this objective: Editorial Selection Acquisitions Data Capture & Quality Control

Copyright 2004 Thomson SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS Century of Science Editorial Selection – which journals to include The Web of Science is a carefully developed and maintained collection of influential journal literature. The inclusion of every journal and serial, 8800 titles, is determined through rigorous evaluation. Our selection of journals published 1900-1944 involved: Examination of citation patterns within the existing coverage, 1945- present, to identify high-impact titles Assessment of multidisciplinary representation within the core group of high-impact journals of this era

SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS Sir Ronald Fisher was an extraordinarily talented evolutionary biologist, geneticist and statistician. His papers published 1918-1930 are today still extremely influential, especially those considered to have established the foundations for modern statistical science. An Author search on “Fisher RA” during the time-span 1900-1944 retrieves 141 results. Sorting by “Times Cited” reveals the most highly cited papers within this results set. For the most highly cited paper, we simply click on the number of Times Cited to view the list of 1765 “citing papers”. Analyze Results to reveal…

SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS Fisher’s most highly cited landmark paper, published in 1936, has been cited within published research more frequently in the past three years than at any time since its publication!

Copyright 2004 Thomson SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS Journal Citation Reports

Copyright 2004 Thomson SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS Journal Citation Reports Its Premise: Thomson-Scientific has for decades captured author cited references (bibliographies) from journal articles that are indexed in the Web of Science and Current Contents. Journals indexed in these two databases are rigorously evaluated and selected for their international influence. This data is extremely important in revealing precisely which journals publish content that is subsequently cited most frequently within papers presented in the most prestigious journals in the world.

Copyright 2004 Thomson SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS Utilizing the JCR Librarians – to assist in the decision-making process with regard to journal collection development and maintenance. Authors - to help with decisions on manuscript submission, identify most frequently cited publications within various disciplines. Publishers - monitor the influence your journals and compare to competing journals. Editors - assist in the tracking the influence of editorial policies over time.

Copyright 2004 Thomson SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS Essential Science Indicators

Copyright 2004 Thomson SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS Helping You Make the Right Decisions What is Essential Science Indicators? A tool that helps researchers, administrators, deans, and directors measure the productivity, influence, and impact of worldwide research activity in 22 fields of science and social science What kinds of questions can ESI help me answer? Examples: –Which universities produce the most highly-cited chemistry research? Is my university one of them, and if so, what is our ranking? –Which researchers have published the most influential work in immunology over the past 10 years? –I published a paper in 1997 in the field of microbiology. It has been cited 45 times to date -- how does this compare to other papers published in this discipline?

Copyright 2004 Thomson SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS The 4 Components of Essential Science Indicators Citation rankings –Institution, Scientist, Country, Journal Most cited papers: long-term vs. “hot” –Highly Cited Papers (top 1% per research field) –Hot Papers (top cited in 2 month period) Citation Analysis –Baselines against which to measure performance –“Research Fronts” to identify trends Editorial commentary –inCites (interviews and essays) and Special Topics (articles) –Science Watch (archives of science trends newsletter)

Copyright 2004 Thomson SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS Rankings of Scientists, Institutions, Countries and Journals, based on the number of papers they have published, total citation counts, and cites per paper

Copyright 2004 Thomson SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS Search country rankings by discipline Alternatively, search for a specific country

Copyright 2004 Thomson SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS View high impact papers to detail research activity Link to Web of Science to see full bibliographic details, the latest citation information and link to publisher full text Setup a Citation Alert to get automated updates of citation activity! Link to Web of Science to see full bibliographic details, the latest citation information and link to publisher full text Setup a Citation Alert to get automated updates of citation activity!

Copyright 2004 Thomson SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS Benchmarks that give context to citation rankings in each field - what is “highly cited”?

Copyright 2004 Thomson SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS On average a Clinical Medicine paper published in 1999 has received 11.27 citations to date

Copyright 2004 Thomson SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS What are the benefits of Essential Science Indicators? Rankings –Use researchers’ acknowledgements (citations) to quantify top research and indicate the influence of a scientist, institution, country, or journal –Find the productivity of an institution (number of papers) as well as its influence (number of citations) Benchmark analysis –Use citation averages and percentiles to measure the relative influence of research papers against others in the same field Editorial commentary –Gain a view of the scientific landscape through essays and articles; offering context and background, not just numbers
