Adam Minatre Megan Cummings Scott Anderson

Background  The LoDril currently has two instrumentation panels  Level/Depth Display  Control Box  Permanent custom mounting  Impossible to satisfy the various preferences of operators

Problem Definition  To create a touchscreen interface for providing feedback on the primary LoDril controls.  Develop a desktop model that simulates the primary LoDril controls.  Easy integration into the current control system  Using modular based thinking  Designed fro the rugged construction environment

Project Requirements Completed  7 Base Signals for instrument panels  One analog voltage input for fore/aft leveling  One analog voltage input for left/right leveling  Quadrature counter input for shaft depth  One analog voltage output for speed/torque adjustments  Selection switch between LoDril/Excavator  Selection switch between Kelly/Service Winch  Selection switch between High/Low Speed

Working Project Requirements  Glare  Site Conditions  Modular Based System  Before/After Wiring Diagrams  Mobility of the touchscreen within the Excavator  Screen Sequence  Desktop Modeling

Should’s  Calibration Screen  Failure Mode – “Way Out”  Video

Anticipated Deliverables  State of the art display for the LoDril  Desktop model that demonstrates the functions  Easy to understand and see screens  Mobile mounting system, flexible for different cabs

Concepts Considered  Micro-Controllers  Relatively inexpensive  Easy to write programming  Cannot change code on the fly  No experience – lengthy learning curve  Programmable Logic Controllers  Expensive  Easy to write programming  Can change code on the fly  Discrete input and output combined with optional cards

Selection of Component Type  PLC is not the ideal solution, but it is the best solution to prove the technology  AutomationDirect DL06

Touchscreen Product Architecture  Primary concern  Ease of operation  Two primary screens  Main Screen  Drill Screen

Main Screen  Replaces the Control box  Safety and performance  Flashing switches

Drill Screen  Takes the place of the Level/Depth display  Contains two meters and a plumb indicators

Help Screen  Current help menus  Touchscreen help  Trouble-shooting help  Calibration Menu

Conclusion  Current desktop model proves the functions of the seven base signals  Further research can be completed to integrate a touchscreen with a micro- controller

Any Questions? Lets go look at our progress…
