This worskshop will cover… Getting citations from databases to Endnote Using Endnote to organize your research Putting citations into Word documents & changing the way citations appear
4
Article Database #1 EndNote Library on your computer Article Database #2 Library Catalog (Books) Dissertation Article – submit to Journal A Article – submit to Journal B Your own notes; “added value” “COLLECT” “ORGANIZE” “DEPLOY”
5
COLLECT: Library Database --> EndNote Search the database of your choice Mark some records for articles etc. Get them into your EndNote library This is very simple in some databases, not so simple in others.
6
COLLECT: Methods of “populating” your Endnote library Direct connection ( via a “.enz” file) “Direct export” from database Manual export from database; then import into Endnote using a FILTER (“.enf” file) Manual entry (only do this if item doesn’t appear in any electronic source!)
7
COLLECT: What about full text? If the document is short, it MIGHT fit into the Research Notes field in its entirety. (Capacity is ~16 pages of text) Use Link To PDF field to link to any file (not just pdf files) that has been saved on your computer’s hard drive Links that go to external databases will often stop working when you’re no longer at your institution, so always save full text files.
8
ORGANIZE: The Research Notes Field… What chapter will this item go into? What argument will it be used to support? Pages of the most important parts Who told you about it Anything that will help you remember it Where your print copy is, if you have one You have about 16 pages of space to fill!
9
DEPLOY: Cite While You Write When you’re ready to insert a citation, highlight it in your EndNote library Go back to Word and insert the citation Add page numbers if you want Change formats according to citation styles you need to use for different audiences
