Class #4, December 2  Bibliography FAQ  Lolly on historical fiction  M. T. Anderson presentation  Christina’s book talk  More historical fiction  Preview panel authors Break  Laurie Halse Anderson presentation  Christopher Paul Curtis presentation  Book discussion  Preview of fantasy

Bibliography FAQ

Beginning paragraph  Double spaced  Not too long, ideally half page to one page  Can use first person in intro (but not in annotations)  Describe your topic  You may also elaborate on the books you found and how you could use the books  Be specific – use your space economically

Bibliography FAQ 15 books total  No more than 3 that were previously known to you  Okay to use books we mentioned or showed in class  You are not required to include a “related list”

Bibliography FAQ Book choice is very important  Check reviews, Guide ratings  Question any choices that got 4, 5, or 6  Aim for diversity  Ideally, no more than one title per author  If you want to recommend more than one book by the same author, add after annotation: “Also recommended by this author: Title”

Bibliography FAQ Order of book list  Make subcategories if it will make your bibliography easier to use  Alphabetical by title

Bibliography FAQ Date and publisher (multiple choice?)  Use earliest date listed in small print on copyright page  Use publisher listed on spine or title page  Abbreviations are fine – “Dial Books for Young Readers” can be “Dial” – “Little, Brown” can be “Little” – “Farrar, Strauss, Giroux” can be “Farrar”

Bibliography FAQ Grade level/reading level  Can use grade range or age range  Be consistent within your bibliography  Make your best guess  For help, look at online reviews — Amazon and Barnes & Noble

Bibliography FAQ Genre, Guide, How found  Genre can include specific traits (e.g. specific diseases, family types, cultures)  If no Guide review, say “HBG: NA”  Use abbreviations for how you found the book, then put key at the end TR, LR, BR (Teacher, Librarian, Bookseller Recommendation) CCBC (Collaborative Children’s Book Center website book list) BGHB Award (Boston Globe-Horn Book Award) Amazon search, BN search

Bibliography FAQ Annotations  Some leeway with length, but definitely no less than 50 and no more than 75 words  Use complete sentences  Do not use first person  The goal is for this bibliography to be useful — the kind of thing you would find on a helpful website for teachers.

Historical fiction  Gives the flavor of a historical setting — not a replacement for nonfiction  Good history? Up to date?  Anne Scott McLeod article  Siobhán Parkinson article  Awards Scott O’Dell Award Beacon of Freedom Award  Series books

Jackdaws  Collection of objects from (or relating to) book  Display with book and list of resources (web sites, etc.)  Single student or group  Present to class
