Where are we going with this?  By the end of this unit, you will understand how we inherit traits from our parents  If your mother has blue eyes and your father has brown eyes, can you predict if their child will have blue or brown eyes? Can you calculate it?  You will create your own mythical creature with its own traits and show its possible offspring.

GENETICS  Key Point #1:  Organisms inherit genes from their parents.  Genes are pieces of DNA that you inherit from your parents. ONE gene instructs the cell how to make ONE protein.

Check out my beads… dawg.  What does this necklace represent?  A chromosome.  What does just one long piece of this necklace represent?  A gene.  What is each bead?  DNA. Chromosome Gene DNA

Check out my picture… dawg

Wait a second…  Can you roll your tongue?  How come some of you can roll your tongue and some of you can’t?  BECAUSE GENES CAN BE DIFFERENT! They come in different flavors…. called

Alleles  Key Point #2: Alleles are different versions of genes  You get one allele from mom and one allele from dad. (Two total.)  There are two types of alleles: dominant and recessive.

Genotype  Key Point #3: Genotype is the combination of alleles inherited from the parents. Phenotype is the physical expression of those alleles.  Ex. Eye color genotype: Ee, EE, ee  Ex. Eye color phenotype: Brown Eyes, blue eyes, green eyes

Easy way to remember  GENotype  “GENe”  PHenotype  “PHysical characteristics”

made of versions called types what you look like WORD BANK: gene, dominant, chromosome, genotype, DNA, recessive, phenotype, allele what you have

Guided Practice  Is this a genotype or phenotype??? A)Genotype B)Phenotype

Guided Practice  Is this a genotype or phenotype ??? A)Genotype B)Phenotype

Guided Practice (GP)  Is this a genotype or phenotype??? A)Genotype B)Phenotype

Guided Practice (GP)  Is this a genotype or phenotype??? A)Genotype B)Phenotype

Guided Practice (GP)  Is this a genotype or phenotype??? A)Genotype B)Phenotype

Guided Practice (GP)  Is this a genotype or phenotype??? A)Genotype B)Phenotype

Guided Practice (GP)  What is the difference between a gene and an allele?

Guided Practice (GP)  What are the two different types of alleles?  How do you represent them?

Guided Practice (GP)  Order gene, chromosome, DNA in order of biggest to smallest.

Independent Practice (IP)

Test Corrections  For each problem you got wrong  Explain WHY the answer you chose is incorrect  Explain WHY the right answer is correct.  If you got 100%...  Good work  Help your group-mates

Key Point Wrap-Up  Key Point #1: Organisms inherit GENES from their parents.  ONE gene instructs the cell how to make ONE protein.  Key Point #2: All living organisms have two alleles for every gene.  Alleles are different flavors (versions) of genes.  Key Point #3: Genotype is the combination of alleles inherited from the parents. Phenotype is the physical expression of those alleles.

Exit Question  Dwainelle has black hair. Is this an example of a genotype or phenotype? Write in complete sentences! Don’t talk during the Exit Question!

Changes  Make sure they understand: two versions of every gene (dominant and recessive) AND every person has two copies of every gene (mom and dad)  I conflated the two  Sort of awkward to say there are two versions (D, R) without explaining what they mean… is there a way to avoid this?
