An idea of graphical browsing tool for Chandra archives Ken Ebisawa (ISAS/JAXA) 1

Today there are popular astronomical image browsers projected on the sky with simple mouse interface: – Google Sky (Google) – World Wide Telescope (Microsoft) However, these tools are for public audience, not designed for professional astronomers: – Not directly connected to data archives – Limited Projection “Aladin” is for professional astronomers, but cannot handle X-ray events, not having mouse interface What about a new Chandra data browsing tool with which we can look at ALL the Chandra archival images while navigating the sky, look at the proposal abstracts, extract light curves and spectra of the sources you are interested, refer to external databases etc, etc? 2

Developments for Suzaku at JAXA/ISAS JUDO (JAXA Universe Data Oriented, http://darts.isas.jaxa.jp/astro/judo) – Can display Suzaku, ASCA, ROSAT, IRAS images on the sky with mouse interface – Connected to Suzaku archives at ISAS (including abstracts) – Easily find Suzaku data around the sky region you are interested – Linked to external database (SIMBAD, NED, ADS, SDSS) and UDON UDON (Universe via DARTS ON-line; http://darts.isas.jaxa.jp/astro/suzaku/udon.html) – Can display Suzaku pseudo-color images (your define color) – Extract light-curves and spectra from the detector region you specify Limitation: – These systems run on a single Linux machine – Limited speed and capacity to handle simultaneous accesses 3

Requests for the new Chandra tool 1.Users can navigate on the sky using mouse 2.Can display color images of all the public sequences on the sky 3.Connected to the present Chandra database: i.e., provide another graphical “entrance” to the database, in addition to the present text interface 4.Can display FOV (footprints) of proprietary observations and planned observations as well 5.Can distinguish proprietary observations and public observations 6.Can extract light curves and spectra from the sky or detector region you specify 7.Graphically linked to the Chandra catalog and external database: click the source you are interested, then you can find the information from the Chandra catalog, SIMBAD, NED etc 8.Can display other archival images (ROSAT, IRAS etc), superposing on Chandra images 9.“Permalink” capability: can go to any screen via URL. An example of Cygnus loop with Suzaku, ASCA and Chandra with JUDO: http://darts.isas.jaxa.jp/astro/judo/?center_lng=312.869287¢er_lat=30.858055& pa=0&ext=21&crd=equatorial&scl=log&img=color&selectedLayer=0,2,3,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,18,19,21,22,24,25,27,28,29&layer4=scl:log,img:color,op:1.00&layer 7=scl:log,img:color,op:1.00&layer10=scl:log,img:color,op:1.00&layer14=scl:log,im g:color,op:1.00&layer29=scl:linear,img:color,op:0.59&search_lng=310.068255&s earch_lat=31.366194&search_crd=equatorial&search_radius=0.02 4
