CHAPTER OBJECTIVES u Reassemble engine in a PROPER & ORGANIZED manner. u Install engine in vehicle. u PRE-LUBE & make all adjustments PRIOR to starting engine. u Inspect & Complete the job. CBCAUTOMOTIVERKCBCAUTOMOTIVERK

CHAPTER INTRODUCTION u To be sure engine is CLEAN! u Low quality cores l.030” undersize crankshafts l.060” oversize bores CBCAUTOMOTIVERKCBCAUTOMOTIVERK

WARRANTY u Some engine warranties are as little as 90 days or 4000 u A longer warranty usually means a higher price. CBCAUTOMOTIVERKCBCAUTOMOTIVERK

HOSES u All hoses that are not in excellent shape must be replaced. u FUEL u COOLANT WATER PUMP RADIATOR u VACUUM u EMISSION CBCAUTOMOTIVERKCBCAUTOMOTIVERK

REASSEMBLY 1 u Before reassembly inspect and count all new parts. u Thoroughly clean block with hot soapy water. u Install Cam Bearings u Install Soft Plugs u Finger start all bolts before torqueing them down. CBCAUTOMOTIVERKCBCAUTOMOTIVERK

REASSEMBLY 2 u Coat the Cam with engine assembly lube u Install the Cam u make sure the cam can be turned by hand. u Remove old crank sprocket and Install new one. CBCAUTOMOTIVERKCBCAUTOMOTIVERK

REASSEMBLY 3 u Install Main Bearing halves with oil holes in block. u Clean crank with carb cleaner and blow dry. u Coat Lower main bearing halves with assembly lube. u Make sure oil hole in bearing and block align. u Plastigauge each main bearing. CBCAUTOMOTIVERKCBCAUTOMOTIVERK

4 INSTALL CAM DRIVE u Install timing chain and cam gear, align marks. u Check manual for how to align marks. u Turn engine two complete revolutions u Check marks again. u Degree in performance camshafts. u Loctite bolts and torque to specks. CBCAUTOMOTIVERKCBCAUTOMOTIVERK

5 INSTALL TIMING COVER u If engine uses fuel pump eccentric, install it. u If engine uses a slinger install before cover. u Install timing cover seal, and lube lip with grease. CBCAUTOMOTIVERKCBCAUTOMOTIVERK

6 INSTALL THE DAMPER u Check for slipped outer ring. u Check keyway. u Check for groove worn in damper from seal. u If grooved, Replace damper, or install speedy sleeve. u Use special tool to pull damper onto crankshaft. CBCAUTOMOTIVERKCBCAUTOMOTIVERK

7 INSTALL THE PISTONS u Turn #1 crank pin to TDC. u Install rings on piston separate ring gaps. u Install rod bearings, install hoses on bolts. u Oil cylinder and piston with clean engine oil. u Adjust ring compressor. u Install piston and rod assembly. CBCAUTOMOTIVERKCBCAUTOMOTIVERK

8 CHECK CLEARANCES u Check rod bearing clearance with Plastigauge. u Check rod side clearance with feeler gauge. u Check deck height with depth mic. CBCAUTOMOTIVERKCBCAUTOMOTIVERK

10 INSTALL THE OIL PUMP u Prime the pump. u Make sure screen is clean, or better replace it. u Make sure screen is properly positioned. CBCAUTOMOTIVERKCBCAUTOMOTIVERK

11 INSTALL OIL PAN u Apply RTV to corners where cork & rubber gaskets meet. u Straighten bolt flange if necessary u Oil pan and screen must match. CBCAUTOMOTIVERKCBCAUTOMOTIVERK

12 INSTALL CYLINDER HEADS u Be sure gasket is installed in the right direction. u Make sure dowels are in the block, NOT the head. u If no dowels make alignment studs. u Page 374 figure 13.19 (b) CBCAUTOMOTIVERKCBCAUTOMOTIVERK

12 INSTALL OHC HEADS u Place # 1 Piston at TDC. u Turn Cam until its timing mark is properly located. u Page 375 figure 13.20 (a) u Ensure valves will not hit pistons. CBCAUTOMOTIVERKCBCAUTOMOTIVERK

13 INSTALL HEAD BOLTS u Clean head bolt threads with a wire wheel. u Torque bolts in proper sequence. u Apply sealer to bolts taped into water jackets. CBCAUTOMOTIVERKCBCAUTOMOTIVERK

14 INSTALL VALVE TRAIN PARTS u Use assembly lube to coat lifter bottoms and sides. u Make sure they are free in their bores. u Do NOT prefill lifters. u Install pushrods & Rocker Arms Lube all wear points. u Make sure shafts are installed with the correct side up. CBCAUTOMOTIVERKCBCAUTOMOTIVERK

15 INSTALL VALVE TRAIN PARTS u Use assembly lube to coat lifter bottoms and sides. u Make sure they are free in their bores. u Do NOT prefill lifters. u Install pushrods & Rocker Arms Lube all wear points. u Make sure shafts are installed with the correct side up.
