4 EDGE™ Phase 0: Planning Mission Statement Product Description/Project Objective Statement The primary focus of ITT’s partnership with RIT is to utilize a Senior Design group to design, analyze and test a scalable prototype of a thermal heater control system that will be present in future satellite imaging systems. The thermal heater control system is a single master multiple slave system that can be arrayed in a distributed fashion with centralized control by encoding and decoding modulated signals through the power lines. The system shall allow for communication between the components in the system, thermally stabilize critical optical subsystems, and be packaged to operate in a space environment. When compared to current Heritage for thermal control, this enhanced design will achieve a higher level of thermal performance, reduce overall weight and power consumption of the satellite.

5 EDGE™ Phase 0: Planning Mission Statement Product Description/Project Objective Statement The team will need to develop an enclosure for the slaves and representative thermal loads for testing the thermal performance. The thermal system shall demonstrate the ability to control and stabilize the temperature of critical systems in the satellite. The slaves must be able to communicate through wiring to a master unit. The master and the slaves each have a control system in order regulate the thermal properties of the unit. The team will need to demonstrate compliance to vibrational and thermal specifications.

6 EDGE™ Phase 0: Planning Mission Statement Key Business Goals/Project Deliverables The primary business goals of this product are to Demonstrate an enhancement to ITT’s current distributed, autonomous thermal control system. Create a more competitive thermal control system that is lightweight, scalable, modular, and power efficient. Demonstrate the ability to adjust thermal conditions while in orbit and verify thermal model by system testing prior to launch. The designs are to be lighter weight, more power efficient, more reliable and more cost effective system.

7 EDGE™ Phase 0: Planning Mission Statement Primary Market /Project Opportunities The primary market for this prototype is the ITT Space Systems Division. Secondary Market /Project Opportunities The secondary markets for this prototype may include groups involved in satellite imaging applications which require thermally stable critical optical subsystems. Assumptions The assumptions in the design of our product include the following: Operating specifications Time constrained to 22 weeks Stakeholders The stakeholders in the design of our product include the following: ITT Space Systems Division D3 Engineering RIT’s College of Engineering RIT MSD program RIT students and faculty involved in the project
