Why a faculty event? We had their attention.  Elsevier negotiations  Dan Greenstein visit to Faculty Senate  Tom Leonard/Senate Library committee letter  “Wheel of (mis)Fortune”  Library website  SF Chronicle article (UCSF boycott of Cell Press)  Faculty resolutions (Resolution G, UCSC)

Desired outcomes and goals move the discussion out of the library engage & educate faculty motivate faculty to change their behavior But what is the best way to reach faculty?

faculty * ideas/instincts connections/clout members with links to: –tenure/promotion –administration * James Hunt, Nicholas Jewell, C.Judson King, Anthony Newcomb, Elaine Tennant (Tom Leonard) librarians ** knowledge of issues organizational skills ** Gail Ford, John Ober, Margaret Phillips, Beth Weil, (Tom Leonard) Planning committee

faculty = ideas all day event, off campus invitational event joint invitation from the Chancellor and Chair of Academic Senate speakers should be other faculty members lots of opportunities to talk (rather than listen) It’s all about the faculty.

faculty = personal connections & clout personal connections with potential speakers, presenters, facilitators quick responses to emails/phone calls

librarians = organizational skills did all the organizational work logistics (called about conference venues, catering, budgets, etc.) ghost writers (invitations, email messages, handouts) deferred to faculty when necessary!

What we should have done differently invited more people more follow-up (to put ideas generated at the event into action) could we have better harnessed the momentum? more support from the VC for Research
