5. Getting Meaning from context Sometimes abbreviations (shortened forms of words) help us to understand a new word or phrase: e.g.= for example i.e.= that is = in other words This is a group of microentreprenuers—i.e. people who own and run their own small business. Who are microentrepreneurs?

6. Read the text entitled “Banking on the Poor” [Interactions 2, pp. 47-48] 3.1. Summarizing (p.49) Circle the number if the one main idea of the reading selection: 1. There seems to be o escape from poverty for many people. 2. Microlending is a system of banks and programs that are loaning money to people in borrowing groups. 3. 7. 3.2. Skimming (for main ideas) - As discussed in the previous chapter to find the main ideas you may skim the text quickly. - The focus is not in the details, but in the main idea (topic). A paragraph usually tells about one topic (subject). The topic is just a word or noun phrase---a few words. - Read the text again pp. 47-48 and find topic and topic sentence of each paragraph.

Find at least two English articles which exposed the serious efforts of a local government or non government organizations to help the poor in Indonesia to be a microentrepreneur. The task will be submitted on the second meeting. (Week 4)
