Request for Study Period on Potential Standard Issues for Cloud Computing ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 32/WG 2 Interim Meeting, Crete, Greece, October 2011 Sungjoon Lim, Korea Database Agency (KDB) Dongwon Jeong, Kunsan Nat’l University (KNU) WG2_N1604

The Need of Cloud Computing Online Computing by network –Everything is connected Service itself is more important –Make it possible everything “As-A-SERVICE” Ubiquitous Era –You can do in every device

What is Cloud Computing: Models Source: Thoughts on Information Technology, Cloud Computing - http://itechthoughts.wordpress.com/category/cloud-computing/

Major Issues: Reality of Cloud Computing Source: blogs.znet.com

Major Issues: Standard Issues Security across Clouds Moving applications between Cloud platforms Describing resource/performance capabilities and requirements Orchestration and middleware tools for creating composite applications across Clouds Common representations (abstract, APIs, protocols) for interfacing to Cloud resources Metadata & data exchanges among Clouds, etc.

Major Issues: Lock-in problem Vendor(or Service provider) Lock-In problem –since the applications may not be available elsewhere, we cannot easily switch the provider. Worse: From some of the Web 2.0 Services like social networks (e.g., Xing, LinkedIn, Facebook) we can’t retrieve your own data. Xing for example has a “mobile export” for data, but this works only for paying customers and only exports address data.

Major Issues: Needs of Standardization Platform Service Dependency from Providers and Vendors Lock-in Problem on Cloud Data and Services Cloud A Cloud B

Relevant Organizations/Groups Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Open Grid Forum (OGF) –Open Cloud Computing Interface (OCCI) Working Group Object Management Group (OMG) Open Cloud Consortium (OCC) Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) Latino-american Institute for Quality Assurance (INLAC) International Telecommunication Union (ITU) ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 38 –Study Group on Cloud Computing (SGCC)

Conclusions Request for a Study Period on identifying standard issues –to support metadata and data interoperability between clouds Tentative Schedule –2011.11 ~ 2012.05 Identifying standard issues and defining the role of SC 32/WG 2 –The 2012 Plenary Meeting and WG 2 Meeting Discussion on standard items –2012.06 ~ 2012.11 Refining the standard items and additional discussions with SC 32/WG 2 and relevant standard groups –The 2012 SC 32/WG 2 Interim Meeting Discussion on the standard items refined Submission of NWIP, If possible
