Ensuring Library Relevancy Begin with users ’ needs and values Speed, convenience, ease, full text, personal control, ubiquity, free, good enough Factor in academic constraints Space, resources, competing demands, new expectations and directions Understand that our values and theirs don ’ t always align Quality, authenticity, ownership, structure, tradition, intermediation, archiving “Libraries and search engines are trusted almost equally.” (OCLC, 2005)
4
Bottom Line: Selling our brand in a buyer’s market Demonstrate that the library can: Deliver the goods in all forms Reduce current and future costs Free up space Return on legacy investment Increase productivity Provide the competitive edge Individual libraries will not be able to do this alone. “We are in the supply business. What’s the demand?” Xin Li
