Images of Jim Crow The name “Jim Crow” was applied to the culture and laws of segregation in the United States. After slavery and until 1964, when the Civil Rights Act overturned it, the segregation of African Americans governed nearly every aspect of American life. The term “Jim Crow” comes from the tradition of blackface minstrelsy, an often distorted representation of African American song and dance.
