1 SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL LITERACY PLAN 2009 - 2010

2 SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL  FOCUSES ON SCHOOL-WIDE WRITING AND READING  OUR PLAN IS BASED ON HIGH- STAKES TEST-TAKING STRATEGIES/WARM-UP EXERCISES, CROSS-CURRICULAR WRITING, STANDARDS-BASED READING

3 SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL  HIGH-STAKES TESTS WARM- UPS: CAHSEE/CST daily warm-ups that include academic vocabulary and questions (Emphasis on Literary Analysis terms and questions)

4 SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL  NON-FICTION READING: DSSR days; each department is designated a certain day for DSSR; (Provide binder that is accessible for each department with SSR resources including resources seen in CSTs and CAHSEE)

5 SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL  CA STANDARDS-BASED READING: Holt Literature and Language series purchased for 9 th through 11 th grades provides 60/40 split of non-fiction/fiction

6 SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL  WRITING ACROSS THE CURRICULUM: school-wide activity; Core classes created common writing prompts by subjects and/or by level; all English teachers will be involved in semester norming sessions

7 SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL  EAP/CAPP: Junior and Senior English classes focus on EAP writing and reading through use of modules  Common EAP-type writing prompts given each quarter  Norming sessions are held and teaching strategies created for re- teaching and skills improvement

8 SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL  EAP MODULE INTRODUCTION: 9 th and 10 th grade students are introduced to the EAP module’s thinking, concepts and writing

9 SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL  LITERACY CLASSES : incoming 8 th grade students who scored Far- Below and Below Basic on CST’s are double- enrolled; placed in Literacy and English Classes

10 SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL  Title 3 - All lower level ELL students are double enrolled in ELD and literacy classes to assist them in improving their reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension skills in English.

11 SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL  FUTURE PLANS: --Cross Curricular with EAP Modules --During “Harvesting Teacher Brilliance” time and/or during Professional Development days/meetings present 2-3 strategies that are most useful school- wide
