CDA/DES PARTNERSHIPS A Chapter and Regional Office Working Successfully Together Arlene Kuntz BSP,CDE May 15, 2004

In the beginning…. 1970’s—DES members involved with the CDA Branch in Regina as chairs of Education Committees 1990’s—Relationship was formalized with DES position on Branch Executive 1996—Regina Branch office provided use of space and postage machine for South Sask. DES Chapter meetings and mail-outs

In the beginning…. 1997—Angelina Beveridge, as chair of Branch Education committee, established Joint Education Initiatives 1998-2002—CDA provided funding on a provincial basis to support DES members’ attendance at the Annual Professional Conference; those funded would serve as resource people in their community to the CDA Branches

In the beginning…. 1999—Regina CDA office offered to be the “headquarters” for the DES Chapter. Chapter documents are kept at the office. Professional resources collected by the Chapter were incorporated into the Regina office’s Resource Centre. 1999—A CDA Branch Liaison position was created in the DES Chapter

In the beginning…. 2000---Branch Co-coordinator (now Regional Director) took out DES membership (non- voting) and attends meetings The combination of events in 1999 and 2000 has ensured increased communication. 2004—North/South Sask. CDA Regional Director and DES Chapter Executives held a joint meeting in February to discuss current areas of collaboration and potential projects for the future

Current Collaboration CDA/DES Newsletter. It is produced twice a year to update DES members on Saskatchewan DES activities, CDA news and resources, and other relevant Saskatchewan diabetes news. North/South Chapters send notice of Education events to all DES members throughout the province and to CDA Regional Offices Joint Education Initiatives

Operational Guidelines/Regulations -- “Diabetes education is most effective in a community when the educational needs of three populations are met in tandem: the consumers (public), the facilitators (DES), and the implementers (physicians).”

Joint Education Initiatives Procedures --DES Chapter Chair books speaker (1 or 2 per year) --Speaker is requested to present for Continuing Medical Education (CME), DES and the Public—all in one visit. --Costs for the speaker’s travel and honorarium would be covered by a pharmaceutical company --Costs for DES event are arranged by the Chapter --The CDA Branch books and pays for the venue and advertising for the public event

Joint Education Initiatives Background/Principles/Values --Members of DES support the philosophy and goals of the Canadian Diabetes Association --In addition, DES members: -respect, value and encourage self-management -enable individuals with diabetes to make choices and take actions based on informed judgment and understanding of possible consequences -believe diabetes education is best provided by an interdisciplinary team of healthcare professionals who collaborate to achieve client-centred goals

North/South CDA/DES Potential projects for the future --DES promotional materials/displays --Recruitment of CDA Champions --Provincial Diabetes Coordinator and Provincial Advisory Body --Sharps Disposal Project; next meeting of this group will occur when information is collected on current status of Sharps Disposal in Saskatchewan

South Sask. DES Chapter Currently 83 members Covers large geographical area; some members may have to travel 4-5 hours to Regina for meetings Have 4 Chapter meetings/education events per year on the second Thursday of March, June, September and December March, September and December events are usually 2-4 hours

South Sask. DES Chapter Past-chair of Chapter is responsible for organizing speakers for these events --members --physicians (nephrologists, endocrinologists, etc) from Saskatchewan and across Canada --other organizations (e.g.. SGI on Driver’s License regulations, Dr. Paul Schwann Centre at the U of R)

South Sask. DES Chapter December education event is brief presentations by those DES members who received funding from the Chapter to attend the CDA Professional Conference December 2003 saw presentations by 9 members Meal is always provided There is no cost to the member for these 3 events

South Sask. DES Chapter June Education event is a full-day workshop Education Committee responsible for planning this event. Members volunteer to serve on this committee. Past-chair of Chapter is Chair of the Education committee Membership of committee is multidisciplinary Members of committee (8) are responsible for one area of planning: speakers, brochure and posters, advertising, facility and food, registration, sponsorship, secretary, evaluations and financial.

South Sask. DES Chapter Members of the committee work together to select topics for the event and establish learning objectives for the program. Committee holds 4-6 planning meetings. A meal is provided and a small travel honorarium is provided to out-of-town committee members. Approval for Continuing Education Credit is obtained Sponsorship is sought from a number of sources (meter companies, pharmaceutical industry, pharmacy chains, independent pharmacies). New Code of Marketing Practices (January, 2004) for pharmaceutical industry can be seen at www.canadapharma.org.

DES Chapter Goal of sponsorship is to obtain funds to provide and enhance education opportunities for the Chapter members, which includes sending members to the CDA Professional Conference Sponsorship available at several levels Major and Gold Sponsors have the opportunity to have an exhibit at the event Complimentary exhibit space provided to CDA and the Dr. Paul Schwann Centre Average 12-14 exhibits at the event Nutrition breaks and noon meal provided Registration fee for DES members is discounted Early registration discount

DES Chapter Brochures and posters distributed to a wide variety of individuals --DES South and North Sask. members --SRNA newsletter --all community and hospital pharmacies in Sask. --Dietitians’ website --Nursing units in Regina hospitals --Home Care offices --Long-term care facilities --Educators in Regina hospitals --Health districts in Southern Sask. --Other potentially interested groups

South Sask. DES Chapter Copying of handouts and mailing of information to those not on e-mail facilitated through the Regina CDA office. DES reimburses CDA for cost of these activities Average attendance is 100-120 at this event Sponsors/exhibitors are pleased to be able to provide information to educators/health professionals from across the province that they might not be able to contact on a regular basis Location is easily accessible to out-of-town registrants with plenty of free parking

South Sask. DES Chapter In 2003, glucose wands were made available at a discounted price to Chapter members who did not have this teaching tool In 2004, have identified resource materials that will be of benefit to members. These will be purchased and made available to members through the Chapter Resource Centre Lending Library located at the CDA Regional Office in Regina

South Sask. DES Chapter Will again provide funding to eligible Chapter members to attend the CDA Professional Conference Eligible members include those serving in the following capacities for the fiscal year of the year immediately prior to the conference: South Sask. DES Chapter Executive, Education committee, members appointed by the Chapter Executive to actively represent DES on internal/external committees/agencies, and members asked to speak at DES events who have waived the honorarium Funding is for 50% of eligible expenses (see Protocol) Members selected to receive funding will provide a verbal presentation at the December Chapter meeting

DES Chapter Identified the strengths of CDA and of DES and merged them together CDA has resources and structure to support DES members DES members can elevate the profile of DES and CDA in the community Together CDA and DES can provide and enhance educational opportunities for Canadians with Diabetes and the members of the Diabetes Care Team
