9 8 Easy to Learn Features of Blackboard: On-line Gradebook On-line grade book allows students to see their grades whenever they want to Eliminates excuses Catch errors Easy to configure Total points grading Percentage (weighted) grading Drop lowest test and/or quiz

10 9 Blackboard: A World of Possibilities Post on Blackboard and students can view, print, and/or save Study guides Worksheets Supplementary materials Video clips & animations Tests answers Syllabus Web sites

11 10 Blackboard: Discussion Board A whole class can form a study group without being physically gathered in one place Students can help each other Instructor can provide help Students can be connected rather being alone and isolated when they study. Great help for online courses BUT THIS NOT THIS

12 11 Use the collaboration section Provide a chat room for students Conduct scheduled online office hours in the chat room feature Offers online students greater access to the instructor

13 12 Blackboard: Announcements & E-mail Tell students to check their Blackboard e- mail regularly You can send group e-mailings You can send class e-mailings You can send individual e-mailings Students can e-mail the instructor to seek help and/or inform the instructor of problems Post announcements on Blackboard

14 13 I’ve learned more, myself! 2002-2004 Learned to make quizzes which can be taken, scored, and reported to me on Blackboard. Added motivator to syllabus to get more students using the discussion board 2004-2005 Use Online Testing Center for testing 2005-2006 Developed online versions of Geog 1001 & 1002

15 14 2006-2007 Use the Chat Room for online office hours Learned to hyperlink pages within a PowerPoint Presentation Use the Assignment Manager feature of the new Blackboard installed for Fall 2006 Learned to encode video clips for streaming Move all videos to the streaming server

16 15 Access the Internet in Class In addition to posting web sites on MyGateway, web sites can be projected on the big screen and viewed in class.

17 16 There are many great websites Imbed a site in PowerPoint or access it directly on the computer. http://www.whoohoo.net/worldturns/ http://africafocus.library.wisc.edu/ Post sites on Blackboard as supplementary materials or assigned viewings to be done on the student’s time.

18 17 PowerPoint and the Computer Control Center Everyone can see it on the big screen Students can print slides as handouts

19 18 Printing Handouts Upload PowerPoint to Blackboard and students can print handouts – 6 slides per page. Students can take notes in class on the handouts Instructor is not held up waiting for slow note takers They can’t get the benefit of animations and video clips in the handouts but will view them in class or at home from Blackboard.

20 19 Embedding Animations A simple gif animation can illustrate a point better than a static overhead transparency.

21 20 Embedding Video Clips Avi Mpg (Mpeg) – most trouble free form? Wmv Quick Time - hyperlink and play outside PowerPoint Only the address is embedded, not the actual video PPT 2003 – Save to CD feature packages the PPT, video clips, and sound files together
