Projects Related on building control Monitoring Fab Monitoring (Intel) Control Philips Lighting (Ember Corp.) Light switch with sensor network Irrigation (Digital Sun) BACNet Demand Response California Energy Commission and UCB Using sensor network, notifies the varying electricity rate so that the consumers can schedule the usage. Submetering each appliance using piezoelectric sensor (Prof White group).

Interoperability Traditional sensors Proprietary protocol (Johnson control, Honeywell, etc). Difficult to interface a sensor product to other products. Interoperability through standardization Zigbee standard specifies the profiles for sensors like lighting, HVAC, etc. Interoperability means more opportunity for a sensor manufacturer, especially, a small manufacturer. IEEE 1451 (Smart Sensor) – plug and play for sensor.
4
Different sensor network types depending on power usage. Type 1: power consumption is not an issue All the nodes are connected to power outlet. Example: Fab monitoring (Intel) Type 2: every node is worried about power All the nodes are running on battery power. Example: Great Duck Island (UCB) Type 3: Two-tier architecture. Tier 1 – Connected to the power outlet. Forwarder node. Tier 2 – Leaf nodes running on battery. Concerned about power consumption. Building control belongs to type 3.
