2 Soft Proton Flaring Soft proton flaring is very dependent on the geometry of the observation. Plotted here is the good-time fraction as a function of time of year and position of XMM in its orbit.

3 Soft Proton Flaring Plotted here is the good- time fraction as a function of position of XMM in its orbit. The black lines show the position of the magnetosheath. Large values of GSE-X occur during summer.
