ENGINEERING DESIGN JEMS 2001 Professor: Donald Elger Mentors: Tamara Cougar, Matt Cunnington, Levi Westra

COURSE GOALS TOPICS –Engineering Practice (what engineers do) –Engineering Process (how engineering do engineering) LEARNING ENVIRONMENT –Fun –Meaningful Learning (AhA !!) –Learners are Successful

Syllabus INTRODUCTION PARACHUTE DESIGN ROCKET TESTING ROCKET DESIGN Learn engineering by doing engineering !

Save the Citizens! Design, Build and Test A Rocket –Flies to a precise elevation –Fast to build –Carries many citizen –Appealing Constraint –Build from scratch (no kit anything)

Learning Notebook Ideas –Learning that fits you –No tests ! Freewriting Question 1 (3 minutes): Some of my favorite things are …..

Question #2 (4 minute) Q2.) (4 min) What I know about engineering is …. Q3.) (4 min) What I would like to learn about engineering is...

NATURE OF ENGINEERING Scientists study what is, Engineers create what will be …. Engineers Create Technology –airplanes, artificial hearts, air bags... –bridges, bicycles, baseballs... –cars, computers, cranes …. –rockets, roads, rails …. –skis, satellites, sun-glasses …. Sometimes engineers create rockets to save citizens !

NATURE OF ENGR (con’t) Engineers Apply Math and Science Engineers Make 1000’s of Decisions –example: rocket diameter, length, shape, color, number of fins, chute design, nose cone shape, recovery system,..….

How do Engineers do Engineering ???

The Professional Decision Making Process

Define the Situation H. needs a design for a parachute for base jumpers. He would like JEMS students to do the engineering. For this situation, What goals would you select? Prepare a list of potential goals for H.

Some decision making ….. Engineering Way –Complex problem ==> Do a simple problem first Constraints: fast build, limited materials Goals –Terminal Velocity = ? –Falls straight –Appealing

Generating Ideas List Ideas for reaching the goal –more ideas, this is better Evaluate Ideas –most cost effective –best quality

DESCRIBE WHAT YOU LEARNED ABOUT WHAT ENGINEERING IS …. HOW TO DO ENGINEERING ….. (free write for 10 minutes)

Homework 1 1.) Help! J. (a high school senior) is trapped on a mountain with his dog Stella (mass is 20 kg) who has broken her leg. Stella needs to be parachuted for rescue and J. has contacted you. Explain how you would find the area for a suitable sized parachute so that Stella can be safely dropped over a 200 ft cliff and fall with a speed of 1 m/s. Spend 30 minute on this problem. You can write, use equation and draw pictures. Spelling, neatness, organization etc. are not important. Be prepared to summarize your solution in class. Your solution will be placed in you learning notebook in our next class period. 2.) Read the handout on drag, and then write a letter to one of your teachers and discuss your initial ideas on how you will go about designing a rocket that has low aerodynamic drag. Spend 30 minute on this problem. You can write, use equation and draw pictures. Spelling, neatness, organization etc. are not important. Be prepared to summarize your solution in class. Your solution will be placed in you learning notebook in our next class period.
